manufacture engineering intern
At Design By Sol, we’re on a mission to make sure that nobody needs to eat dodgy bacon again and that food is never thrown away before it needs to be. We’re developing an active food packaging solution called Bump Mark, that is able to indicate exactly when your food goes off. We’re in the first cohort at the Central Research Laboratory, a startup incubator in Hayes and we’re always on the look out a for a manufacture engineer to intern with our team.
We’re looking for somebody who is curious about how things are made, knows their way around a workshop and will be excited by the prospect of taking on a wide span of tasks. An interest in improving food safety and reducing food waste would help us be friends.
SOME OF YOUR ACTIVITIES MAY INCLUDE:
- Sourcing relevant suppliers
- Testing prototypes in the workshop
- Liaising with manufacture consultants and suppliers
- Attending factory visits, accompanied
- Creative problem-solving
- Materials research
- Calculating the costs of various manufacture options
We think that this role would be suitable for somebody studying some form of engineering or product design but please get in touch if you come from a different background and are interested in mixing biology with plastic packaging. We love to be proven wrong.

The Central Research Laboratory is based in the Old Vinyl Factory in London, a short walk from Hayes & Harlington station. Work hours are very flexible.
