Mimica Touch is a food freshness checker that reacts to the environment around it, just like fresh food does and updates itself.

The label is checked by touch, so when it's smooth - your food is fresh. If you feel bumps - then it's time for the bin. The label only goes 'bad' when your food does too.

So, how does it work?

A gel that copies the bio-structure of the food it is labelling is set over a plastic bumpy sheet - because jelly is solid when it sets, you cannot feel the bumps underneath at first. When the gel expires, it turns back into a liquid and then you can feel the bumps underneath, letting you know that your food is bad.

What is it made from?

We have been using gelatine for the first version of the product to help determine when meat products go off. Gelatine is a natural food product which is high in protein, so it decays at the same rate as other protein foods and it can be calibrated to match different meats that have various decay rates.

We will be exploring this solution for other food groups in the future.

The label simply copies what the food inside the package is doing, so the expiry information is far more accurate than a printed date that can never update itself.

And because it's tactile, it's brilliant for people with visual impairments.

BrewDog Play is a digital board game with a collection of games that can be played at a BrewDog bar. Simply ask for a Play Board and turn it on by pulling the wooden frame apart to roll out the flexible e-ink screen.

BrewDog provides classic games for everyone to play for free and if a player purchases a new game, it is free for the whole bar to play for the evening.

You can choose to play either totally digitally, or if you want the tactile experience you can ask BrewDog to 3D print pieces for you while you wait for your drinks to be poured.

Smartphone displays can be used to show ‘hands’ of cards. Doing so will disable all phone notifications to allow total focus on the game.

If a new game has been designed in the area and uploaded to the database, it is free for local players to play. This could also be used as a platform for beta testing before a game is released onto the market to gain feedback from the community.
